As a topical discussion of our current times, please take note of these useful methods to process the fruit that grows on our planet, Earth. By the footsteps in the mud, wearing sandals, Crocs, and flippity flops, our hard working pedestrians of Vietnam bring you the joy and amazement of… drumroll please… F*ing Fruit.
When you flash-freeze fruit at the peak of its ripeness, frozen fruit can taste amazing, and retain all those healthy vitamins, fibre and anti-inflammatory polyphenols packed inside. Here’s a guide on what to do with frozen fruit.
Create a beautiful compote
You can make a gorgeous compote in seconds by softening frozen berries in the microwave. Take what you need from the freezer and heat in a small microwavable dish, like a ramekin. Add your own touch with a sprinkle of citrus zest, a drop of vanilla extract or a pinch of nutmeg or cinnamon. At last, you have the perfect topping for porridge, pancakes and yoghurt.
Make smoothies
Whip up a quick and healthy breakfast in the morning by preparing bags of frozen fruit to throw in the blender with water, milk or fruit juice. Start your day with a boost of vitamins to get you going. There you have the ultimate fuss-free breakfast.
Add them to your cocktails
Save your lemons, limes and oranges before they go bad and slice them and freeze them to make the perfect garnish for your cocktail glasses. You can also use them as ice, it’s just as effective and will add a subtle flavour to your drink.
Blitz ice cream
This is a hassle-free dinner party trick that will wow your guests. Simply blend frozen berries, yoghurt and honey in a food processor, and you have a delicious homemade ice cream made in seconds. Bananas and mangos also work perfectly.
Elevate your salads
Try shaving frozen fruit such as tomatoes on your fresh burrata salad as a refreshing cold element to your dish that melts in your mouth. Use a grater and be careful not to slice your fingers. Or add them to vinaigrette for a special homemade salad dressing.
Some tips for if you’re freezing fresh fruit yourself:
Firstly, you’ll want to buy ripe fruit for maximum flavour. Ideally fruit that hasn’t had to travel a long distance before freezing.
To freeze fruits like berries, wash and dry the berries, then put them in an airtight container and freeze.
Be sure to store your fruit near the front of the freezer to prevent freezer burn, to preserve the fruit’s flavour and texture.
Peel and cut fruits like bananas, peaches, and mangos before freezing.
Avocados can be frozen whole, seed and all.
Smoothie anyone?
Love, Meredith
